Refurbish bamboo chairs??
I have a set of excellent quality bamboo chairs with wonderful thick cushions. They were originally for an indoor dining room. However, they are now used on the large covered patio. They do not get rained on. Over time the varnish has worn away and they need a new finish. Instead of renewing the varnish, I think I'd like a color. Is there a special type of paint recommended for bamboo used on a covered patio? (NOT milk paint!)

Hi Joan. I understand you don't want to use milk paint. However, you can use chalk paint, mineral paint, latex or oil paint. There is prep work involved with all of them. To prepare the bamboo scrape and scrub off any peeling or flaking varnish using a putty knife and a wire brush. Then mix a solution of a half-cup of trisodium phosphate and a gallon of water. Be sure to put on goggles and rubber gloves and wash the piece thoroughly using a sponge. Allow to dry. (I would wait 24 hrs) Then you can paint with the color of your choice. Good luck Joan. Hoping all is well with you.
Best solution would be to use spray paint. Rustoleum 2X spray paint. Several light coats will give you a smooth finish

If you want an elegant, traditional and easy to clean finish I would use a black"lacquer" finish. I agree with using spray paint. A great repair for chipping of the finish is to keep a bottle of black nail polish close by! Definitely spend more time on the prep than on painting. You will be very glad you did.

I have painted several rattan chairs using small brush , foam stick and roller with good success. I generally thin the first coat to make it easier to get into all the "nooks & crannies" for my purposes I use a satin finish.
Good luck.
Are the chairs wicker, as in the turquoise furniture above, or rattan, such as J Brown's picture above?
I would go with an exterior paint, perhaps even enamel.
You would need an exterior grade latex or oil paint just because they are being used outside.
