I strip it off with a product called Citristrip. Easy to use and low odor. Once I have cleaned the piece after stripping, and it is completely dry, I sand it. Good luck and stay safe!
Jan: if you want to paint over it, removing varnish may not be necessary... unless you want to refinish the wood grain.
Sand it off. Citrisrtip stripper.
If you want to take it off, you can use Citistrip stripper and then sand it. Or, you can just paint over it with milk paint or chalk paint. I painted my kitchen cabinets using the milk paint by General Finishes and it came out well:https://momhomeguide.com/best-way-paint-kitchen-cabinets/
Hi Jan. If you plan on removing the varnish and then painting the wood, sanding can be an effective way to get rid of the varnish while prepping the wood at the same time. All you need to do is start with 150-grit sandpaper and sand the entire surface. Once you've done that, move on to 220-grit sandpaper and repeat. Good luck Jan. I hope all is well with you.
I like citristrip followed by mineral spirits to remove an existing finish! I simply follow the directions on the citristrip bottle.

Paint thinner should do the trick.
Hello Jan,
Rub it down with fine sandpaper, or use varnish remover and a scraper. Good luck!
You can either sand it or strip it with a chemical stripper.
