Debra: Paint a white color! ...that would make it super modern... or you could tone it down with a light gray shade.

Hello .
Please send a picture for me to be able to comment further.
White is always a good choice to change a piece of furniture to a more modern look, and will certainly go with the gray table and maybe brighten the room. Sounds like it may be a little dark. You could always add a patterned wallpaper to the back of the hutch shelves, too.
Select a brighter color if you already have a lot of navy and gold. Perhaps a lighter shade of blue to blend in with gold hardware. Too much of a dark color like navy makes a room look smaller. Add a pop of color.
As a lover of Antiques, I would be very reluctant to put paint onto anything that may be worth more money if sold, therefore allowing the seller to be able to buy a modern piece and maybe have some money over too. Best wishes
You could go bold with red which would work with those colors. Another option is paint navy and accent the molding with gold. If you do that, I would go with RustOleum metallics for the gold.
Hello. I would suggest chalk paint it is a wonderful makeover.

Just about any enamel paint (durable) would work. However, if the hutch is an actual antique, then I would leave it alone and not ruin the value.
Why don't you go with a light shade of gray and distress it a bit!
