Does aerating your lawn do any good?
It would depend on your soil and grass. Some grasses benefit from it, others doesn't really make a difference. Also, how good is your soil, how porous, what is the mixture. We are in zone 7b, never aerated, and my dad has the best looking yard of St. Augustine grass around.
If you want to put in the time and labour to aerate you lawn yourself, then go ahead. In my opinion, based on personal experience, the difference shown in your lawn is not worth paying someone to do it.

Hello Mo. Aeration loosens compacted soil. Air is essential because without it, organisms like earthworms can't thrive to recycle nutrients and keep the ground healthy. And while grass might not be able to thrive in compacted soil, weeds can.
It does loosen compacted soil, which helps earthworms and the growth of grass. Weeds will live in compacted soil.

If you opt for aeration, be aware that some companies are aerating to a depth of only 1", but charging as much as companies aerating to the proper depth of 4", so ask before renting/hiring someone, and if hiring, get everything in writing.
Some equipment comes with chains that run over the 4"plugs to break them up, so you don't have to rake the "plugs".
Aeration is very effective in improving a lawn.
Renting dethatching equipment will more rapidly dethatch, than manually raking a larger lawn.
Both are needed to improve some lawns.
Hello. It can depend. In our situation a more rural environment we purchased a pull behind lawn tractor aerator and it seem to introduce more weed seeds to the existing lawn. In our case our turf worsened.
Some weed seeds can exist in the seed bank in your soil for up to five years.
If you have an existing lawn service or dedicated lawn maintenance schedule to include weed prevention—-this might not apply to you.
we live in the south and have fescue grass so yes, aerating is good for fescue and we do it every fall it makes the grass grow back thicker and we add seed to fill in the blank spots

Hello Mo, Aerating. ... An aerator pulls plugs out of your soil. This helps loosen compacted soil and allows air and water to reach the roots. Aerating is considered a better way to dethatch your lawn since it puts less stress on it. That being said, you do not have to aerate every year, you can do it every couple of years or more or less, your call. Hope this helps
We started aerating about 4 years ago as sort of 'extra insurance' that the yard is healthy. Yet I can see a difference now.
Need to notice: we have clay soil here, so aerating really helps with that.
Hello Mo,
If you do, you are allowing the lawn to breath. If you don't it will not drain so well and will become congested.............
The thing with aerating is that you are trying to build the health of your grass. Healthy grass chokes out weeds. Aerating is always a good thing
Hi Mo, yes I believe it is, depending on how "packed" your soil is and how well the grass is growing. I've had this done every few years and feel it really encourages healthy growth. You can rent a machine to do this that has about 4" barbs all around the cylinder to penetrate the earth. The plugs then dissolve back into the ground as the lawn is atered and there's rainfall.
It should be done every few years depending on the type of soil you have. I have done it once in the past 3 years of my sod.
Depends on your soil type. If it's dense/clay type it should help w aeration
