How do I extend length of antique double bed
I have an antique double bed and the length is a problem for many folks. Their feet hit the footboard. Is there an extension that I can hook on to the end of my wooden side rails that has another metal hook at the end that will attach to my footboard??

Hi Nan, many thanks for your help and suggestion. This looks like it would extend the bed width-wise. I need length wise. Also, I don't have a metal bed frame. It is an antique bed with wood side rails with metal hook at the end. I use slats with it to hold mattress and box spring...
You can purchase converter rails that will change your size from full to queen. This will also require a new, larger mattress. We did that with 3 of our full/double bed sets and purchased from a furniture store.
I think I would cut the side rails and add a piece to the middle of each one. That way your metal hooks stay in place.
the problem is that the mattress you have now will be too short if you extend the bed- is there any way to just remove the footboard and not use it or maybe replace it with a shorter footboard?
Hi! I found this project and the person explained what didn't work and what did when he decided to extend and widen an antique full size bed to use a queen size mattress. Worth reading, I promise! Good luck and stay safe!

You could also take your antique bed to a welder if it has metal rails to have the rails extended: https://www.ehow.com/how_8764147_lengthen-bed.html
Hello Judy,
Might be better to make new Side rails that are the right length and stain and wax to match original bed, or get them made for you. Always keep the bits you remove from the bed to allow you to make it longer, as they may be needed in the future. Oh! don't forget to wrap and label the items!!
We had this same problem. Honestly, we bought a simple queen size metal frame and attached the antique double headboard to it and eliminated the foot board. The double mattress itself was too short so we needed a queen and there was really no other way, without wrecking the entire bed, to accomplish that. Good luck.
