How to replace vinyl siding pieces at the bottom?
Vinyl siding pieces look to have been chewed through by an animal. I have extra siding pieces left behind by the previous owner. Can I replace just the damaged pieces? They are at the bottom near the ground.

Hi KH,
Yes you should be able to replace the damaged pieces as long as the replacement pieces are the same dimensions.

Tom Silva of "ThisOldHouse.com" has a video showing replacement of damaged vinyl siding. It's relatively easy to follow, using a tool that's designed to lift the next level of siding to facilitate repair.
If an animal previously chewed through the vinyl, was it under the house? If so, you'll need to insure it won't recur.
See if you can find any entry points where critters can get in, so you can seal them up before making repairs. Here's a video showing the process of replacing the siding. I have done it myself and it isn't difficult. It's good to have a helper if it's a long piece. Good luck and stay safe!

Are you sure any holes (that critters could get in) have been covered over completely?
Hi this is Peggy. I hope this information helps you fix your siding. Starting at one end of the damaged piece, push the end of the zip siding removal tool up under the siding until you feel it hook the bottom lip. Slide the zip tool along the bottom edge to release the vinyl siding from the piece below it. Pro tip: The vinyl siding zip tool will save you loads of time.

You can easily replace them. You are very fortunate to have extra siding. The pieces inter lock into each other. I would advise you to watch a few youtube videos on installing siding to make yourself more comfortable with the process.
Yes you should be able to lift up and look under to see how there on
Yes! How lucky that you have extra pieces. It's actually a quick fix as the how to's above show.
Down at ground level, I would treat for termites while the area is exposed.
I would also see if there’s something that smells bad to the critters, as they will remember this place from their own smells they left there.
If nothing else, I’d mix vinegar and Pinalin.
What a lucky break! Yes, there are ways to replace them. If you can't find a tutorial on Hometalk, there are plenty online.
You going to have to lift the board above and slide the new board under it, and if you've got critters I would suggest you slide some hardware screening along the bottom and into the ground to keep them out. Also can put some red pepper along the bottom to deter them. In wilderness cabins I've lived in we used flattened cans to line the bottom of root cellars to keep pack rats out of our food supply.
