To remove stain, you have to sand the wood until you get it down to the unstained wood.

I wish there was such a thing! But sadly, sanding is the only real option.
Hi Isabel,
As others have said, stain gets into the wood so sanding is the normal way to remove it. It is possible to try bleach. Just be sure to learn about the process and where to be careful. Here's an article that should help with that. Wishing you the best.

I tested a paint and varnish stripper from Max. I is nearly odorless and took away multiple coats of poly that had been on a table over 30 years. Some of the stain also was removed. Look for this at Home Depot. However, stain works by soaking into the pores of the wood. Therefore you still need to sand to get to bare wood, but you don't say if there is a top coat over your stain. If so, it takes a LOT more effort to remove that layer. I had a china hutch that was stained really dark (popular in early-70s) with WATCO Danish oil stain. I spent a lot of time sanding the wood down so I could re-stain a lighter color. The sanding on the doors was going to be almost impossible, so I just made new doors and stained to match new color.
HI ISABEL,
What sort of stain, and where is it? Wood, fabric etc....
Sandpaper. Stain seeps into the wood so isn't removable by a stripper.
