I do have quite a bit of peeling paint as well, and i want to repaint with latex semi-gloss
If it is from a leak, your best bet is to paint over it. For some reason, Kilz in the spray can seems to be a great match for most ceiling paint.
If the spot is from something else, it would depend on that. Clean as you would a painted wall. Usually magic eraser will do it. If not, microfiber and soapy warm water.
Eliminate the source of the spot first. I have used poly, varnish, and Kilz to hide ceiling spots. Then painted with matching ceiling paint. Just putting ceiling paint over a spot will look OK for a while and then it will show through again.
Kilz primer over the spot them touch up with same ceiling color paint
As long as it won't come back I think you're best bet would be paint if your ceilings are textured. If they're smooth though you may be able to just scrub it off.
If it is mildew, clean with white vinegar to kill the spores. It may stain the area and you will have to scrub with something to lift the stain. I would try hydrogen peroxide for stains over bleach because of enclosed area.
But if the stain is a water stain you need to fix the problem and then paint over that area. But the key is to fix whatever is causing the spots to begin with. Good luck!
You could paint over it!
It would help to know what the ceiling is made of, a picture as well. Can you tell what the spot is?
The most common cause of ceiling spots is a water leak, maybe condensation from a pipe, maybe someone got food or a bottle of champagne blew.
If a leak, it needs to be addressed with a source located and repaired, then prime and paint. If from food, etc, then just clean it, if stained, then prime and paint.
Hello could you possibly post a photograph so we can see your problem it might give us some more information on to what your problem is.
I know for ceiling tile stains Armstrong does make a proprietary Stain cover spray paint which can be found in the ceiling tile area of bigbox hardware.
I fixed a water spot on the ceiling after a leak with Kilz and then white ceiling paint.

I think priming with Kilz and then painting over it with ceiling paint would do the trick. I need to do this for a bathroom ceiling, too!
Have you tried a magic eraser? I used one the clean food of my kitchen ceiling and it worked great.
Hi Jackie, best bet would be a touch of primer then feather over it with a color match of the ceiling color, don't go too heavy or it will really stand out!
