It’s best to use natural fibers like linen or cotton. Be mindful that the tighter the weave of the fabric, the easier it will be to paint.
However, I enjoy a very organic look, so I didn't mind using this loose weave fabric shower curtain which I had purchased at my local Target.
Supplies:
- If you need a certain length or size here are some alternatives on Amazon for around $20.
- Truth be told, not all stencils are created equal, and Stencil Revolution produced a quality product. It was easy to work and was more sturdy than other stencils I’ve used in the past.
- Acrylic Fabric Paint
- Tool for application Sponge or Brush
- Iron
Have a question about this project?
Doesn’t the price of materials add up?
The materials do add up; however, it is far less expensive than a custom fabric curtain. My sister-in-law used to run a drapery business before the kids out numbered the parents. The price of fabric these days are crazy! Plus, my sewing skills are not as good as hers.
The look of a custom piece has a more luxury feel to it. I like to spurge here and there in a DIY type of way, lol. (I'm very frugal.)
Second, if my guest bathroom was larger I probably would have used the stencil to create a piece of art work by reusing an existing canvas I no longer wanted. I would have painted the canvas black and stenciled a white leaf.
Lastly, the stencil could be reused on towels, a bathmat, pillows, or as an accent wall. As a crafter I also have most of the supplies on hand from left over projects.
What about a sheet with as much cotton in it as possible?
Hi Carolyn,
Your question just reminded me of my first DIY in my first apartment. I used sheets as curtains and also made matching pillows.
Could you use a sheet? Yes, would I...probably not. Here's why, I wanted to achieve a luxury feel with rich fabric. In your case, I may recommend just picking up a beautiful shower curtain instead on clearance. It may give you a better end result. Does that make sense?
I was testing trying it on a fabric paint canvas and used a bleaching technique to prepare the fabric. OMG! The fabric came out beautiful, but the hot water used to "prep" the fabric shrunk the material. I plan on reusing it to make DIY ombre napkins and pillows instead on my blog soon.
So many ideas...so little time.
Rebecca, any guest that has the time to look for tiny flaws in your custom-made shower curtain, needs to take a laxative and a chill pill, not necessarily in that order! LOL
That's the beauty of hand-made! Anyone else remember that song from the 60s about ticky-tacky houses that all look the same?
I also love the idea of a framed white leaf from the stencil, on a black background, Rebecca, if you could find the space and time. Could/would you put it on the wall outside the guest bath?
Great project!! Thanks for sharing. 😃
Every place is homey; but when choosing finishes I don't pick wild cards and go for a timeless look.
For example, a bathroom and kitchen should NOT reflect the decade or trend because "life" happens and you may need to sell. That's an expensive update.
Maybe start here (?) you could leave your questions for me on the blog or here. I'll reply when possible.
