The outside depends on what it is made of - wood can be sanded and refinished or painted. The inside fabric can be removed and relined with new fabric. Spray adhesive will make this easier and you can use the fabric that was removed as a pattern for the new.
Hi Gini, when you are redoing the box there are a lot of great paints to do that now. Just make sure your box is made from wood. A lot of the 60s/70s boxes were very thick cardboard with paper overtop. If that is the case, just be aware that paint may bubble the paper with its moisture.
If it is wood, then sand it down and re-stain. Also you could paint it, if you use chalk paint, then apply a wax coat over it because the chalk paint needs the protection from chipping off. Another idea is decals or furniture transfers.
carefully take out the fabric lined pieces and use a new fabric or paint the one already on there- paint the jewelry box and add any decorations you want to the outside - look for photos of the type box you would like to copy
I have also seen the ballerina on sites like wish and alien press.
Hi Gini, hope this one helps you out,

Outdated Jewelry Box Gets a Makeover
Vintage Jewelry Box Update
Hi Gini. Carefully remove the fabric from the jewelry box. Lay it down on a piece of new fabric and cut around it. Attach the new fabric using spray adhesive. You can decorate the box with paint, markers or washi tape. Keep the clasp or replace it with one from Hobby Lobby (using the coupon on their web site). Good luck Gini. Merry Christmas.

If you want to bring it back to its original form, I would search on Etsy or eBay to see if you could find an identical one. Then you could paint it or stain it to match.
this is a good tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dtq1liU1Mtc
Strip it totaly then get spray on adhesive and cover with fabric you like michaels crafts has the spray for that
Interior can be replaced with felt, glued down with a spray. The clasp should be fastened with tiny screws. Clean exterior with tsp and then repaint exterior.
Maybe try looking up what it used to look like and copy it
