Antique Secretary Refresh
We found this beauty on Marketplace and it was too sweet to pass up! Antique pieces are my absolute favorite to refresh.
It certainly needed a lot of love, and that began with a good cleaning. We used some denatured alcohol with water, a 50/50 mix and scrubbed.
There were quite a few nails that had popped out and left holes, so after sinking them back in, we filled the holes with Plastic Wood. Once dry, it was sanded down to be flush with the rest of the surface.
We used our favorite sander, the Surfprep 3 x 4 Electric Ray. I have a discount code and link on Instagram for it. We used the 1/2 inch foam pads around the contours and the screens on the flat surface to take off some of the old finish that was failing.
After removing all the dust with a tackcloth I took some clear wax to seal and refresh the wood, using a natural bristle brush to apply. I normally use hemp oil to seal raw wood but I didn't want it to turn an orange tone, so after the clear wax I went over it with a white wax which helped to tone down the wood just a little.
After a good scrub to clean the hardware with dishsoap and water, we used our sander to polish it too with a 1/2 inch worn fine grit foam pad.
Here it is refreshed and looking good!
