Hi Beverly,
What is you backsplash made of? There are many kinds out there and they are treated differently based on what they are. For the best advice for your question, we need more information. Here is a link on how to paint a tile backsplash (fairly common) if that is what you have:

It's easy to paint a abacksplash, but depending on what the backsplash is made of, you might want to use a different method or applicator. For sheetrock backsplash, just paint with a roller and brush while masked off from the cabinet and counter area. If you're wanting to paint a tile backsplash, you may want to apply a good primer such as Zinsser 1-2-3 to give the surface a foundation for the actual paint to adhere to well.

Giani and Rustoleum make kits to paint countertops and backsplashes
Hi! It depends on what your backsplash is. Prep is the most important step because even the cleanest backsplash in a kitchen has residue from cooking, etc. Use TSP or a TSP substitute to clean it (wear gloves). Then use the paint that is appropriate for your surface. Both Giani and Rustoleum make tile kits, if that's what you have. I've used the Rustoleum kit and it's excellent. Good luck!
what is it made of? Can you post a picture so we can see?
I would use a tub and tile painting kit like Giani or RustOleum since this is an area that is subject to wear and tear.
