Add a drain in the area to divert water and put down gravel. You could go with decorative pea gravel or size 57 or a bit smaller for regular gravel.
Hi Sandy a picture might help us give you the best solution. As far as mud goes I've always found that building the area up is the best solution. You lay down a bed of sand or pea gravel and cover it with pavers. Here's how one hometalker made their pathway. https://www.hometalk.com/diy/outdoor/walkways-paths/gorgeous-garden-path-diy-18909638

We had a muddy walk back to our wood shed. Hubby picked up some pavers and dug out a spot the size of the paver but at ground level so a lawn mower can be run over the top with no problem. Don't know why we didn't do this years ago.
Simple and took less then an hour and not a lot of expense.
You can find pretty affordable paving stones. You can set them in a stepping stone pattern and then you've got a cleaner surface to walk on. :)
My husband did the same thing by our shed as Mogie. We had some leftover granite from a kitchen and bath remodel and worked just fine.
Those large square pavers are pretty inexpensive at your local Home Depot. Then just add a small amount of gravel around each one. That will definitely keep the mud down.
You could put gravel down
Try building up the area, use gravel, or add pavers. The key is to make the area higher so water drains away.
