Upcycled Jeans Placemats
I keep all my family's old jeans to upcycle and craft with. Denim is such a lovely fabric that is hardwearing and comes in lots of wonderful shades of blue. I have made a lovely stenciled table runner from old jeans before (see here).
This time I used my denim scraps to make some lovely placemats for my table.
For this craft, you will need a selection of denim scraps. If you can use denim from jeans in different shades of blue the placemats would look better.
Instead of going for the normal rectangular placemats, I wanted a hexagon shape. Hexagons are popular in home decor at the moment and one of my favorite shapes.
Did you know that a hexagon is made of six equilateral triangles?
To make my patchwork placemats, I made them out of six denim triangles.
I used paper triangles to help the denim keep its shape as I stitched them together. Find more details on the blog link at the end.
I hand-stitched the triangles together one by one.
To add some color to the mats I used a colored fabric for the hexagon center and the backing of the mat.
The backing fabric also gave a lovely edge to each placemat.
I love how the placemats turned out and have made six so far, so I have a complete set. Everyone is slightly different, in the combination of denim patches.
I think that these mats could be upscaled and turned into rugs. You should check out my many ideas for making denim rugs here.
