Hi! It depends on what you have on the front of your house now, the zoning board, the amount of space you have to work with. Some municipalities are very strict about setbacks from the road, the type of foundation required, etc. Check with your local municipality. Ours has all the building codes published online, but, you still have to get your permit approved by the engineer for the township or city. We recently went through this with the township about a new sidewalk and the rules about everything was very detailed. Good luck!
Keep in mind that in some municipalities/counties if the porch is attached to the roof of the house, it may be considered an extension and not just an addition. This will increase your home insurance premiums.

This is an involved process and it depends on what you're looking to build. You might need permits and inspections, and it'll definitely have to be built to your local building codes. Check with your local building department on what's required and go from there.
Hi Donna,
First draw a picture of what you would like, then draw up a plan of what you want to make it. Make the list of supplies and go to DIY store. Otherwise call in a Builder to help you with foundations etc.

Yes, this is a complicated job and being in the architecture profession for 30 years, here’s what you need to do,
so that you can build the porch with the help of Pros.
Since we don’t know your building skills, I’m going to cover a lot.
Once you do your Due Diligence (listed above) you will find that your City or County Building Dept. will have a Hand Out or Brochure that specifies what sizes of footings, lumber and details like guard rails & hand rails, but they’re usually for decks not porches with roofs. Get the Hand Out anyway, as you’re going to need it to start sketching Plans.
Porches are technically an Addition and you’re going to need professionally drawn Plans to get the Building Permits. You will take your sketches and scan them to email to an architect or a qualified designer.
Site Plan (shows Setbacks, Roof Plan & drainage)
Foundation Plan
Floor Plan w/ Electrical
Elevations and a Section (attachment to house, foundation, roof)
Specifications
After you have the Plans drawn up, you can pull your own Building Permit, to save a little $.
When you’ve got approved Plans, you’ll get your Permit.
Use the Permitted Plans to get quotes from 3 licensed and insured contractors,
with it written, in your Request For Quote cover letter, that you expect them to let you do A, B, C.
Meaning you will be helping them build your front porch by doing/providing whatever you specify in your Cover Letter.
Be aware that many contractors may not to let you do anymore than the buy all the materials and be the gopher. They may cite insurance-requirements.
You can either go on to the next bidder or you can talk to them about what you can put in-writing to address any liabilities concerns.
Good luck.
Hi Donna, hope this helps you out,
