Hello. Excessive water could be a problem.
I’m guessing you meant gnats and yes, try letting the soil dry out completely, then water only as needed and not as often. I usually wait to water by sticking my finger in the soil about an inch. If it’s damp, skip it.
Gnats? There are different kinds. There are fruit gnats and there are fungus gnats. Fungus gnats lay larvae in the plants that eat the roots. They are tiny and black and move around when you touch the soil or bump the pot. A dose of insecticide sprayed on the top of the soil enough to dampen it once or twice usually does the trick.
You can make a fruit fly trap. Cut a plastic bottle about 2/3 of the way up. Remove the screw top lid. Squirt a little dish soap in the bottom, add 2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar, 1 Tbsp sugar, 1/2 cup warm water (dissolve the sugar). Place the top inverted into the bottom. They will fly into the neck to get at the solution but won't be able to escape.
If those pests just won't quit, you can use a solution of water and soap in a spray bottle to spray into the top layer of soil (or pour it directly on top). You can also do this with an organic insecticidal soap or Neem oil mixture; these natural pesticides should be effective after a few treatments.
Hi! I use apple cider vinegar, a squirt of dish detergent and a little open dish. They drown in it.
Hi Terri, you can use those little gnat stix in your houseplants, be sure to lay some onto the soil of your plants as well. https://www.amazon.ca/Superior-Contains-Complete-Non-Toxic-Pesticide/dp/B07M9CVMWX
At the same time you can lure and kill gnats with a mixture of apple cider vinegar, water, sugar, and dish soap. (Alternatively, achieve the same result simply by combining red wine and dish soap.) Pour diluted bleach down the sink or tub drain, if you find gnats hovering near plumbing fixtures. Hope this helps you out
Gnat tape is cheap and hang wherever they gather.
