We find here that keeping our grass cut extra short near the house helps A LOT. Making sure to weed eat and make certain everything is short is our biggest defense.
Cedar oil spray is probably your best bet. It will repel and kill them.
We just let our free range chickens take care of them. Haven't had a tick problem in over 10 years. They also love slugs and roaches.

Eucalyptus oil is known as an effective tick repeller and killer. Just combine 4 ounces of purified or distilled water to a small spray bottle along with 20 drops of eucalyptus essential oil.
