Coffee Table Makeover
A long time I go I had a lovely glass topped coffee table that I had painted and made look just lovely but unfortunately my kids had a little accident with it and next thing I knew the glass top had shattered into a million pieces. I decided rather than get a new piece of tempered glass cut for the top, I would replace it with a table that had a wood top instead. It seemed a little bit safer with my silly kids.
This is the coffee table I found on Facebook Marketplace after searching for a long time for a style I liked and something with a solid wood top. So many of them these days have tile or glass tops and I knew I didn't want that.
First I took the table apart since it was sort of wobbly and I cleaned it and made sure it was smooth and then I started painting it.
I used my favorite chalk paint recipe in my favorite white color, White Dove.
Once I had several coats of white chalk paint on the base of the table, I began to put the table back together again making sure it was very strong and secure.
Next I turned the table right side up and took my heat gun and started removing the varnish and the stain from the top of the table. Every so often I applied a coat of Citristrip on it and let it sit for an hour or two and then I scraped it again. I did this over and over until almost all the color was off the top of the table. I had originally thought I would re-stain the table top but once I got it down to the raw wood I found that the wood was so pretty that I couldn’t bring myself to cover that up again and so I decided to just put a clear coat of varnish on it and let the wood shine!
After several coats of polyurethane on the top of the table and on the painted base, I brought it inside.
After it had sat untouched for about a full day and night I went ahead and started using it normally. It's important for the poly to dry very well in order for it not to get marked up.
