I want to make some cake plates for my Daughters Shower, what paint would be best? Is there a "food safe" paint? either spray or brush, or is there a sealer, that would make the paint safe? Thanks for all your help~

Do you have one of those paint your own pottery places in town? If you have a good idea of what you want to do, it seems like you could just go do this there, and avoiding having to buy a bunch of supplies you may never use again. If you already have a bunch of supplies, or want to do this at home, they could at least recommend the best materials to use.

If I'm not mistaken, I think this blog post shows the type of painted dessert plates you are talking about: http://www.centsationalgirl.com/2011/03/diy-colorful-dessert-stands/ I'm not personally aware of any spray paint or sealer that would be considered food safe so using something like paper doilies, parchment paper or even a little circle wax paper between your plate and food items would probably be your safest option. And depending on what type of desserts you plan to serve, I don't see why you couldn't use pretty decorated (and coordinating) party napkins as a barrier too. For instance, cookies or cupcakes in paper liners could be set on a plate lined with a paper party napkin without the napkin becoming soggy.

Thank you Shari, it's probably best to just use paper doilies, like she did, then I can use any paint. Thanks for steering me in the right direction!
  • Most craft stores have paint for glass and ceramics. They will be clearly marked which ones are food safe. If the cake plate is glass, paint on the opposite side that will be in contact with the food. The process is called "reverse painting" because you begin with the top layer of paint first and then paint the background layers.

Thank you, I'll have to check out the glass paint, the plates I'm thinking of useing are silver plastic (Ithink) plate chargers, I'll check at Micheals
