360 Sod (Donna Dixson) on Sep 23, 2012When you say you haven't had any luck with anything growing, what have you tried so far? (Don't want to suggest stuff you have already tried:). That is a lot of territory to cover!Helpful Reply

Douglas Hunt on Sep 24, 2012Finding a ground cover for shade that will take that amount of traffic is a challenge, Patricia. You might want to take a look at Leptinella squalida, or "Brass buttons."Helpful Reply

360 Sod (Donna Dixson) on Sep 24, 2012I like Leptinella as well. It would be expensive to cover that much space I think. I retail it for $3.00 for a 4" pot. You may able to find someone to give you a volume discount on it. What about using a turf type grass? That might be less expensive. As long as you can get water to it you could get it to grow. The new Tift Grand Bermuda is supposed to take 4 hours sun, will be somewhere in the neighborhood of $300 per pallet of 450 sq ft. It is supposed to take some pretty heavy traffic as well.Helpful Reply

Patricia S on Sep 24, 2012I've tried an inexpensive "shade grass mixture" , St. Augustine, tried a burmuda sod - not sure what kind of burmuda and mondo grass. I thought I might try some kind of moss... I'll check out the Leptinella (ouch!)..Helpful Reply

Gail Salminen on Sep 24, 2012Patricia, because they are under pine trees, the soil will be more acidic, so you may want something that likes that type of environment. Here periwinkle does well everywhere. I did find this post - hope it helps http://www.phancypages.com/newsletter/ZNewsletter4816.htmHelpful Reply

Douglas Hunt on Sep 25, 2012If the Tift Grand really gets by on four hours of sun, they will sell a lot of it!Helpful Reply

360 Sod (Donna Dixson) on Sep 25, 2012Brand new on the market with only a few farms growing it Douglas so it is still pretty expensive to purchase. I suspect IF it is really all that AND more farms grow it the price will drop in about 3 years. Currently the patent on it has some pretty stringent grower guide lines, so it will be interesting to see how it all comes out. The new Zeon Zoysia is also supposed to take a good amount of shade and I think it is around the same pricing. Regular Bermuda and or Centipede will not take that much shade.Helpful Reply
