Dorothy Collett on May 30, 2015Some caterpillars munch on dill, cilantro, fennel. Some butterflies visit (in later summer) zinnias, lantanas, pentas, honeysuckle, almost any blooming plant. Each butterfly has its own diet. The monarch only survives on milkweed (different types). So if you want a special butterfly you need do do the research.Helpful Reply

Sue Peet on May 30, 2015Take Dorothy's advice especially if you want to attract a certain type of butterfly. I've seen Monarch on butterfly bushes, milkweed. Go on the internet, there is lots of information on attracting butterflies.Helpful Reply

Cynthia Spurlock on May 30, 2015Just be sure to plant some parsley, or dill for the butterflies to lay their eggs and then watch the caterpillars devour the plant. We watched them build cocoons and then hatch. Circle of life!Helpful Reply

DORLIS on May 30, 2015PLANT ONLY ORGANIC SEED/PLANTS OR YOU WILL END UP WITH DEAD CATERPILERS AND BUTTERFLIES. MANY STORES (HOME DEPOT AND I AM SURE LOWES) HAVE PLANTS PRETREATED WITH A NICOTINE DERIVITIVE TO KEEP BUGS OFF YOUR PLANTS. THIS KILLED THOUSANDS OF BEES IN OREGON WHEN ALMOND TREES WERE TREATED. TRY A DRIVE IN THE COUNTRY AND LOOKL FOR MILKWEEDS, WILD ASTERS, ETC THAT ATTRACT BEES. LATER IN THE FALL, GATHER SOME SEED TO PLANT IN YOUR GARDEN.Helpful Reply

Mary Ann Sutter on May 31, 2015Contact the state government agency whose mission it is to protect and preserve CT's natural flora and fauna. Here in MO it is the Dept of Conservation and they have a very informative web site and personnel. Don't forget to include plants that are beneficial to caterpillars as well as the adult butterflies. Good luck.Helpful Reply
