Keep on top of throwing out food that’s past its use-by date, checking for vegetables that are starting to spoil, and jars that have been open for longer than advised. As you open new jars and bottles label them with the date you opened them so you can instantly see when they need disposing of.
Once every couple of weeks, clean the shelves and walls with a solution of 1 tbsp Borax Substitute with 1 litre warm water, or equal parts of white vinegar and warm water. Rinse with clean water. Clean the outside of the door and the handle once a week with washing up liquid and warm water, making sure you also clean around the seal.
Make sure your fridge is between 0ºC – 5ºC, and use a thermometer to be sure. Organise your shelves so that ready-to-eat foods, such as opened jars, dairy products and cooked meats, are on the top shelves and that raw meat and fish are at the very bottom to avoid it dripping onto anything else. Fruit and veg should be kept in the salad drawer at the bottom.
Always make sure food is covered properly and always allow hot food to cool before putting it in the fridge. Over-crowding stops cold air from circulating meaning the fridge temperature won’t be maintained properly.
Line the bottom of the salad drawers with sheets of paper towels and change them for fresh ones every week. Keep an open tub of bicarbonate of soda and half a lemon in the back of fridge. The bicarb will absorb odours and the lemon will keep it smelling fresh.
