We took down the old office type drop down ceiling in the upstairs game room. The house was built in the 1930s and We need to put up insulation up before we put the ceiling and walls.

  • Check your local building code. They vary greatly across the country. What is needed in an area with harsh winters is far different than in a less harsh climate. Here is a guide for you!

If it was me I’d try the foam stuff you spray on, unless it’s way too expensive.

Get a few estimates. The last time we did insulation ourselves we later found out it was only like $100. More to have it done because they get the insulation wholesale. Plus they know what is the best type to use.

You can get styrofoam sheets at the builder supply store. Not the insulation kind-they make a special panel to fit between the rafters to make sure that air can still flow between the wood and the insulation. Otherwise, no matter what you put up there-if it is against the wood, the sheathing will rot. You have to have that air space. Then you could use spray foam, cellulose or batting. Just remember to leave an air space!

Check with local building codes to see what R value is required in ceilings and walls
