Take everything out. I mean everything. Sort through what is used and worn in the past yr and what was not. For everything not worn for a year separate in bags for "toss, give, or sell" piles. Do this with everything. What is used put back in and sort clothes by color or summer/winter etc. however you need them sorted. Same with shoes and purses. Then use tabs off pop cans to go over the hangers to allow a second hanger on it if needed. Put purses on a hanger on the back of the closet door, put shoes in a shoe hanger or put up a spring bar on the back of the closet for each row of shoes to hold them for you behind the clothes or under the clothes. Use an over the door hanger on the master bathroom door if you need on the back of it for more shoes or purses. Give or sell all purses you seldom use. Hope this will get you started. Sweaters can go in baskets on the shelves, add another higher shelf above the closet shelf if needed for more baskets, hats, etc.

I'm a bit of an all or nothing person, so I would empty the closet first. This is your chance to do painting or repairs. Sort all like items together: shirts, pants, dresses, etc. Then go through each of the piles and put the items in one of 3 different piles: keep, toss, donate. You may need to utilize the entire house. If you start out with 6 piles, you will end up with 18 before you can repopulate the closet. Put the toss and donate piles away from the keep piles. Now do sub-sorting. I am assuming that you are talking about a clothes closet. First determine where you want each type of item placed. Get matching hangers so as to give a cohesive look. Shirts: sort by color, hang them up, and then sort by sleeve length; pants: color, hang, then length; dresses: same. Posting a picture of what you have to work with would be great. As for shoes, get them up off the floor, because no matter where your closet is, the floor gets dirty. If you have wall space, get a hanging rack for shoes, purses, scarves, etc. Get rid of the toss and donate piles ASAP.
