Hi Ned, using 2x2s when framing out a door (or a wall) should ne different than using 2x4s. I've found 2x2s to be notorious for warping so that's something to consider and they will split like crazy if you're not careful. Problem is there wouldn't be enough wood for hinges, latch and door stop. Most door jambs are about 4". Thickness of 2x4's and drywall on each side. 2x2's wouldn't be able to carry the weight of a door.

Hi! 2"x 4" is actually the minimum to frame. 2x2's aren't going to give you the frame you need. They aren't expensive to buy. Good luck and stay safe!
