DIY Kids Bed (Toddler Sized)

We decided it was time for our twins to move into a big boy beds recently. One of them will be taking the bottom bunk with our older son. The other is will stay in a toddler sized bed for a while. They all share a room so space is limited, plus our kids are small so a toddler bed will last him several years.

After looking at the options available for purchase we decided we could make our own toddler bed for much cheaper (and better quality)! I sort of love how it turned out!

If you want to make a twin bed, you could easily do it sing the same method, but with twin measurements.

Head to your local hardware store and pick up some 2x2s, 1x6s, and 1x4s. Cut them to the correct sizes. You can get the measurements for a toddler bed here: http://www.loveourcrazylife.com/diy-toddler-bed/

To make the side rails you need to glue 2x2s to the insides of 1x6 boards. Make sure they are level. After gluing, be sure to also screw the pieces together.

While you are waiting for the glue on the side rails to dry, make your head board and foot board using 1x6 boards and 2x2s.

Use wood screws to attach them.

Take the 2 side rails and use 1x4s to create supports for the mattress. Screw each 1x4 into the 2x2 cleat on the side rail. With this support you do not need to use a box springs.

Attach the headboard and footboard and you are done! You may choose to paint the bed or just to seal it. Now just add the mattress.

mattressmattressInstead of slites you could of used a piece of plywood so mattress doesn't go down each opening. You won't feel the lumps. Love the bed.

  Great comment. We have a slat bed for us (store bought) and the mattress doesn't sink in at all (memory foam mattress). I think it depends how much space is between the slats?
