Google search : hide away beds... there are several different design ideas out there that will work .... did you say... "for a pet" ..? Most of them use a framework attached to the wall or floor (to hold the weight of the bed) the more stability you can give it... the more likely your pet will use it (they will not jump onto something that feels like it might fall)
NOT FOR A PET, but for a toddler bed... but thanks for the info..
To use the dog design for a child, alter the dimensions. Do you really want this type of bed for a toddler... all the toddlers I know would take it apart and get injured in the process. If it is just for visiting relatives, it is safer to get an inflatable mattress... cover the air mattress with a heavy blanket before topping with sheets or the mattress will be too cold to sleep on. I know people who use an air mattress all the time because this type of mattress is cheap and very easy to move. Children grow so fast, think about just going to a single bed and skip the toddler bed. When building a custom bed consider the mattress size that will go on it before building the bed.
This is not my area of expertise, but as a grandmother here are my thoughts.
1. If there is not one already on the market, there must be a reason why. Toddlers get into everything and the furniture makers don't want the liability issues. I can visualize fingers getting caught in many places or the child getting caught upside down against the wall.
2. If you did make one, now you are liable if anything happens to your child.
3. If you do make one, bolt the back base to the studs in the wall on both sides so it cannot fall forward, and figure out some baby-proof way to attach the frame onto the floor when it is down. Latches that the toddler cannot undo by themselves and close up into the bed.
4. If you need space in a small room, try a trundle bed instead.
Make sure this will not crush your toddler if he/she pulls it down!!!
Also, be sure bureaus, bookshelves, etc., are secured to the wall.

Family members had these types of beds, and someone always got a finger caught, or got hit in the head, so we always used foam fold out chairs. The kids loved them, and they are comfortable, and easy to move.

I agree this is likely a huge safety issue! I also agree that inflatable mattresses are great for occasional guests. If you want a permanent bed for your grandchild but want it out of the way, consider a day bed, or perhaps a single bed that has hinges to fold it up to the wall when not in use?
If you still wish to have a Murphy bed, please use a standard size and purchase the correct hardware! People are irreplaceable!
