Unless it is a glass top, use scouring powder like Ajax, Clorox or Barkeepers Helper. If it is a glass top, make a paste of baking soda, a few drops of Dawn and vinegar, stirred. Clean with an old toothbrush every few hours, repeating until all stains are gone. Use clean soft clothes for wiping and buffing so that the stovetop shines. You can buy cream cleaner for glass tops, but that’s just the paste you can make yourself. Best wishes!

If it is ceramic, I highly recommend using the ceramic cooktop cleaners. They have a polymer in them that bonds to the glass and helps prevent future problems. It's a similar idea as rain-x on windshields. The polymer helps the surface shed stains

You should use detergents such as soap and dishwashing liquid. All of them can be used, wear gloves when doing so
I always use soak the top with some vinegar and baking soda and then clean with warm water and Dawn dish soap.
