Steel wool and CLR
Hello I have soaked my metal items in vinegar. I thought my rather expensive Felco pruners were goners rusted left out in the garden but the soaking restored them after wiping the sediment away and giving them an oiling they’ve been as good as new.
Hi, here's a great article that will help you get rid of those rust spots - https://www.hunker.com/13408528/how-to-remove-rust-from-a-cast-iron-grinder
Soak with white vinegar and it should take care of it. WD40 is another good option that also helps protect from rust.
I have used WD40. I have also used this iron brush with hubby’s cordless drill and a broken tipped paring knife with great success! No kidding about the knife. Then sanded with steel wool.
Soak it in vinegar if you plan to use it. Steel wool would help or a wire brush. Don't use anything like WD40, CLR, or anything not food safe. Those food grinders have a rough surface that chemicals can cling to and embed in the metal.
I'm in William's camp. Use only food-safe products and mechanical (elbow-grease) to clean. Sometimes these items have become pitted from years of use and so you definitely don't want to use any product that is not food safe while cleaning.
I know that some folks soak their rusty tools in kool aid. Just mix a pack of Lemonade Kool-Aid packet with a few drops of water. Using a scrub brush scrub the paste onto the stains. The citric acid in the lemonade and the abrasiveness of the paste will help clean even the worst stains.
Hi! Submerge it in cola overnight and then wash it well the next morning. Real Coke works faster, but, even the cheap cola works.
we use “pot-ash “from our fireplace.
make a paste with “ pot-ash” and water let it set about 2 hrs for hard to clean areas. Otherwise it shouldn’t take more than 30 min to an hour to complete.
”Pot-Ash” can be bought I’m told but I’ve never seen it myself. It’s also safe to consume ( I’ve also heard of many great-grandparents using it to make biscuits!)
Good luck ☘️ !
looks like brass or some kind of copper this stud works great on old metals https://amzn.to/3tgfFx5
I make lamps from meat grinders - I use a wire wheel to remove rust. If it’s really bad I use EvapoRust - soak it for 24 hours there will be NO rust. Wash it with soapy water afterwards and if you are going to paint it clean it with acetone first.
I do not suggest that you EVER use these grinders for food even after cleaning.
