Try oxyclean and hot water . Work into the fiber with an old toothbrush . Try not to saturate the carpet as you don't want the padding underneath to mildew . As you clean , blot it dry with an old towel.
Can you post a photo? Was this mentioned in your offer or any counter bids? Did you receive a one year home warranty?
If the professional carpet cleaners can not remove the stains ,sorry but I don't think it will be possible to remove.
I wonder if it's part of the actual rug where it has been worn on the edges? Naomie, has a good point. If it was there when you bought the house and you have a one year home warranty the previous owners might be responsible. Even if you don't have the warranty, in my state you must declare flaws that you know about. They certainly had to know about black stains. Call your Realtor if you don't remember about the warranty and explain the problem. You might have to talk to a lawyer to find out who is responsible.
