Cleaning hardwoods?
How is the best way to clean (original) 1950’s hardwoods after taking up carpet? The padding was just beginning to breakdown, so there is an uncomfortable “film” left behind. It’s not bad but a good cleaning is in order. Thanks all!!

Hi Mel, you might first try cleaning the floor with a 1:1 ratio of vinegar:water, then rinse well. If you still have a "film" on the wood, then the link below may be of help to you. I hope so. Good luck with your project! The old wood floors can be made beautiful and useful again.

When my daughter pulled up the carpet in her house, we scrubbed the floor on our hands and knees with pine sol and a soft bristle scrub brush and then mopped with clear water. I have also used Mr. Clean and like that even better because it didn't need rinsing. Good luck!
After you've removed the leftover pad material, I would try a stiff brush on a long pole that you can get at True Value.
I use a giant swiffer like cleaning tool on all my clients hardwoods and my own floors.... this is what it looks like with removable pads you can throw in the washer..... I got mine at Grocery Outlet for $15.... https://www.microfiberwholesale.com/products/professional-microfiber-mop-system-1?variant=32169073901603&gclid=Cj0KCQjwqKuKBhCxARIsACf4XuGz6Ht-vF_WOl72yRc-KUMEfnIgdu3L0606qp3Kyo0i2XiLKGbE4LgaAqMNEALw_wcB My client got his when he brought his flooring at Lumber Liquidators. I use Bona on most of my clients floors, but recently I've used Rejuvante hardwood restorer on a floor to get rid of scratches.
I used 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar, 1 tsp blue dawn, 1 gallon warm water to clean my parents' floors. Same situation on theirs. It took a lot of scrubbing and several moppings but eventually it all came up.
I use Bona Hardwood floor cleaner.

Try to rent a floor scrubber to get all the residue off and clean real good.
I would scrub it with Murphy's oil soap, that should remove the film.
Murphy's Oil company has several really good products that will work for you. You can get it at Home Depot or probably your local building supply,
