I rent the Rug Doctors from my grocery store. Note. Do not use hot water or steam, can set the stains, just tap. Also rinse with cold water after done, no soap. This will keep carpets cleaner longer. Soap left in carpet makes It attract dirt. Always go over it with cold water to rinse.

If it's only spot cleaning, "Resolve" carpet cleaning spray works very well.
