Easy Way to Maintain Your Wood Cutting Board
Has your wood cutting board seen better days? Let me show you how easy it is to care for and maintain your wood cutting board!
wax products were gifted by howard products. opinions are mine.
Do you do a lot of cooking in your kitchen? I do! We have all three of our meals at home most days. So I use our cutting board several times a day.
The board gets cut on, mashed on (pressing garlic!), and sometimes scraped on. It can show wear pretty quickly.
Let’s take care of all the wear and tear that these kitchen workhorses take!
- your wood cutting board (or buy a new one!)
- Howard’s Wax-It-All
- chip brush
- blue shop towels
I’ll show you how to wax a chopping board to care for and preserve the wood on a handmade wood cutting board that my hubby made from reclaimed lumber. This is not my everyday board; it is a new one for our vendor spot at Wilderlove Handmade and Vintage.
The first step is to make sure the board is clean. I sprinkle coarse salt and scrub it with half of a lemon. Then I wipe it off with a clean cloth.
The next step is to apply the wax. It’s super easy to apply with a chip brush.
Get a little bit of wax on the brush and work it into the grain of the wood.
I use a scrubbing motion to make sure the wax gets into the grain of the wood.
Look at the difference the wax makes! The wax has beeswax, carnauba wax, and food-grade mineral oil that just soaks into the wood.
I waxed the sides and the bottom of this cutting board. This board also has handles, so I waxed them as well.
Let the wax soak in and dry for about an hour.
Then come back with a blue shop towel and lightly buff the surface.
The wax is food grade so it is safe with foods. Which is a good thing since this is a wood cutting board!! Haha!
Wood cutting boards should be re-waxed every 4-6 weeks depending on how often your use your board.
I like to wax our chopping boards every month because I use the board a lot. Every day and usually several times a day in fact!
Truth be told, my hubby does this regularly so I don’t even have to think about it! He loves to make these custom wood cutting boards and he loves to take good care of them too 🙂
Thanks to my sweet man!
