Sorry, moisture got into where they were stored. It's possible the tapes are damaged. You can check with places that transfer video tapes to DVD and see what they say.

Inside the tapes themselves or the cases? If it’s the tapes, I’d locate someone who can handle that as well as digitize the footage.

If it's on the tape, I'd contact a professional.

You could always give the old cell phone remedy a try. Place them in a bowl of uncooked rice but don't hold your breath.

If you can find a video tape cleaner, you might be in luck, but don't get your hopes up, they are hard to find.

You could try using Wet Wipes, but not tried it myself!

White cleaning vinegar is the best thing to kill mildew spores. However, I would do some investigation on degrading the quality of the tapes. I would say toss anything that isn't sentimental and get those transferred. They are just getting lower quality with time.

I would call Beckart.com 1-262-656-7680 and ask them about their chlorine dioxide gas Aqua Tabs and see if it will bother the plastic the tapes are made from.

Chlorine dioxide gas is what was used to kill the mold in the post-Katrina buildings & their contents.

These small-area-use Aqua Tabs are for use in a closed room or a car (gets rid of smoke smells too) and you’d want to be out of the house for 3 hours, like a fumigation.
