Hi Tina: Rub toothpaste onto the tarnished silver using a dry microfiber cloth. then gently clean detailed areas of silverware with a toothbrush instead of the cloth. Rinse the silver under warm water until none of the toothpaste remains and wipe the items dry with a clean microfiber cloth. Here's a site that shows how to clean heavily tarnished silver:

I sell a lot of silver on Ebay. Jewelry, silverware, serving sets. Silver polish like Wrights and dips like TarnX tend to remove some of the metal. The foil method doesn't work that great and still leaves a grey film that still needs to be removed. I use white toothpaste (not gel) and a damp toothbrush. For large items I use a damp cloth. Also works on copper, brass, gold, porcelain, ceramics, sneakers, plastics, etc. For my sales I needed one product for cleaning everything.

Here's another way, just be certain that it's really silver and not silver plated.
Here is what Aunt Peaches did with toothpaste http://www.auntpeaches.com/2013/09/the-toothpaste-trick.html
just brush it with toothpaste and rinse it clean
Use a soft cloth and rinse it off.
Use non-gel and non-abrasive toothpaste.
Squeeze a small amount of it on a soft cloth or paper handkerchief. Rub onto the jewellery or silverware with circular motions to polish it and clean off the tarnish. Leave it for 5 minutes and then rinse off the toothpaste with water.
