You always have to wash the fabric first to remove any sizing so it will take the dye. And to keep the crinkly look, I would twist the fabric and put rubber bands to hold in place. We used to do our skirts around a broom handle to keep the pleating and crinkle.

Get 3 buckets. Wet the gauze in the first one. Move it to the dye bath in the second one. Stir and let sit for about 10 minutes. Move to the 3rd bucket to rinse. Line dry.
