Years ago when I was renting I made a 'faux fireplace' with simple boards - just create 2 upright sides with 3 cut pieces each and a top 'mantle shelf' with a large fat board glued across the side pieces - all just LEANED against my wall and stayed there because I had cut a very slight slant on the bottom of the side pieces- the 'fire' was just an electric 'flames' heater (no fixing allowed to rental walls! but you could screw or glue it to your own walls). I did also add a bottom 'hearth' to that structure too on which sat the electric flames heater! Painted that black and the columns & mantleshelf cream. I loved my faux fireplace ! With filler, sanding, and 2 coats of paint you would never know it wasn't 'built' - my neighbors loved my "fireplace" so much I gave the whole structure (+ heater) to them when I left to buy my own house.

We only have a Menards here, no HD or Lowes, but they carry what they call "Mantle Shelves" in different lengths. Easy to put up-instant mantle to decorate!
