Thrifted Mirror Turned Faux "Antiqued" Gold Beauty
I absolutely love antiqued mirrors! The detail, the chippy wood, the gold framing, all of it! The only problem.....the cost! I see these beautiful mirrors all the time at antique stores; but they typically carry a hefty price tag with them.
I found this old mirror the other day at the thrift store for $10; and knew it would look amazing with an antiqued gold finish. I knew the beautiful detail of the frame would definitely create an authentic look!
Cost of project is based on the price I paid for mirror. I had everything else on hand.
I found this old mirror at the thrift store. I loved the style and detail; but really wanted it to be gold. I mean, who doesn't love a vintage/antique gold mirror!?
This was the before. The white was pretty; just not what I wanted.
I decided to use a gold paint I had on hand. If you look back at my previous projects; you will see I used this paint for another mirror project as well.
I found a small medium size brush works the best for these type of projects.
After applying one coat, this was the result. I definitely wanted a much more vibrant gold look; so applied a total of three coats.
I wanted to add little texture to the gold paint, so I lightly dabbed a generous amount of paint along the frame to create the effect.
This is what the paint looked like after adding a little texturing throughout. I personally like the little bit of detailing it adds.
When painting a mirror frame, don't forget to do the sides as well for an even look.
After the frame was painted, I wanted to create a more "antiqued" look. I did this by lightly rubbing gel stain over the paint.
I focused more on the corners, in the detailing.
Important!! Remember to rub the stain off right away. This will leave just a stain look behind on the paint; creating a nice darker tone in the detail.
You can see the way the stain emphasizes the pretty detail.
Isn't she a beauty!!!
