Iron board?

want to make a iron board for quilting projects in order for my fabric's to be ironed smoothly and flat such as 2.5" strips.

They make little table top ironing boards. I use mine on my coffee table while watching TV for small things. You can use a small piece of plywood covered with heavy canvas as a make shift ironing surface.
do you have to cover with a certain type of fabric for safe ironing and some batting under it?
