It will depend on your surface but in general, you want to make sure that you nail a large enough nail into a stud. You can run wire or string across the back of the picture so that only nailing in the center is required.
When you're hanging something that large and heavy its pretty important that you mount it directly to a stud in the wall (the wood structure that sits behind your plaster walls). Use a stud finder tool to find a couple of studs and then screw some 2" panhead #10 screws into the studs. Leave the screws protruding from the plaster wall about 1/2" and hook the picture wire around the head of the screws.

How heavy is heavy?
If the picture is too heavy for one person to life up on their own, I would recommend using two large picture hooks (nailed into the wall studs) with wire on the back of the picture. (see first picture below)
If the picture is too heavy for two persons to life comfortable then I would recommend a french cleat, as Vimarhonor suggested. (see second picture below)
Sounds like you need to find a stud in the wall and use a nail to hang the heavy pic. I would not advice sticking a nail into the drywall/sheetrock alone.
yes...thanks for all the tips and links!
Idealy you want to put your anchor in a wall stud. A simple stud finder can help you. Depending how heavy, you can also use a "Toggle" bolt through the dry wall
Anchors and screws
If Solid walls use Masonry screws or Special nails and hooks for the purpose. If timber frame and Plasterboard, Find the timber frame and fix into to that.
