My son uses an old sock & put 1 cup of rice in & tie it closed & you can heat in mic wave 1-2 minutes.
If you do not want to use an electric heating pad, you can use rice. We sew rice into drapery material for bags to heat in the microwave. But you can use a sock filled with rice if you like and tie it shut. Heat it in the microwave 1 minute but be careful it will be hot. We use a small towel between the skin and a hot rice bag. Hope this helps!
My fav' medium is barley. It's not as vulnerable to moisture so it lasts longer. If you love nice scents, put in some cinnamon and nutmeg.
