Waterproof Blanket

Raise your hand if you've been to a sporting event and ended up with a wet seat because the grass was damp underneath your blanket. If you've been there, keep reading because I have the solution.
I purchased a shower curtain from The Dollar Store for $1.00 and used a blanket that I already owned.
Spread out the blanket, right side facing up. Lay the shower curtain over the top of the blanket.
Pin the shower curtain to all four of the blanket's edges.
Cut away any excess shower curtain then sew around three of the edges leaving the fourth end open.
Remove the pins and turn the blanket right side out.
On the open edge, turn the raw edge of the blanket and the edge of the shower curtain towards the inside and sew closed.
Sew along the edge again with the right side facing out.
On the open edge, turn the raw edge of the blanket and the edge of the shower curtain under and sew the open edge closed.
At various places in the middle of the blanket, sew 1" - 2" lines that will attached the shower curtain to the blanket. This will keep the shower curtain and the blanket together in the middle.
Pack a picnic lunch, head out to that soccer game and enjoy the day without having to worry about sitting on a damp blanket.

Just a comment … a lot of California venues will not allow waterproof picnic style blankets or tarps on the greenbelts citing that tarps and blankets with waterproofing membrane can cause a greenhouse effect which heats the grass and causes damage.

Would water seep through stitching?
I've got shower curtains like this and they tear easily. Why would you sew something like this to a blanket and get it snagged on a twig or tear while washing it as it wraps around itself in the washer?
