Have You Tried a Rotary Cutter? I was always a bit nervous of the speed and sharp spiral cutting edge of a Rotary Cutter...but here's the scoop...tackle the How-To of a Rotary Cutter, and Your Quilt Making will be Super-Fast and Easy!

To Begin, it is Imperative that You Have These Materials...

1- Rotary Cutter (Amazon LINK)

2 - 24 inch x 36 inch Cutting Mat

3 - Clear Acrylic Sewing Ruler

A Complete Cutting Map and Rotary Cutter Kit on Amazon... LINK.

Pick Your Fabric...We Are Cutting this "Be What You Want to Be" Flannel Fabric into 6 1/2 Inch Squares. The 1/2 inch is for the sewing seam.

We will be making a Quilt with 6 Inch Squares - all flannel - crazy fabric patterns.

To begin Cutting the Squares...First Place the Fold of the Fabric along the Right Side of the Mat...this will assure you of a straight edge.

There is the 6 1/2 Inch Measure Mark on the Mat...

At the 6 1/2 inch mark, Place the Ruler on the Edge to be cut...

Press Down firmly on the Ruler...Keep Your Fingers AWAY from the Blade.

Release the Blade by Pressing the Button...

Glide the Cutter Smoothly Along the Ruler and Cut...

Cut the Length and Width of the Fabric into 6 1/2 inch squares...

6 1/2 inch perfect square.

I find it is easiest to do ALL the Square Cutting First, before Assembling the Quilt...

Here is the Pile of "Ladies" ready to go.

Moving on to the Next Fabric...

Repeat: Line up the Fold Along the Right Edge of the Mat. Place the Ruler on the Mat Measurement for 6 1/2 inches.

Press down firmly on the Ruler...Keep Fingers Safely Away from the Cutter Blade. Release the Cutter Button and Glide the Cutter Along the Ruler Edge cutting through the Fabric.

The CUTTER is very sharp and it can easily cut through layers of fabric...This Saves Time! :)

Done! You Are Ready to Create a Crazy 6 Inch Square Quilt!

This is how the squares come together to make a quilt

If you are hesitant about switching up to a rotary cutter and transparent rulers due to being afraid of nicking your fingers, I would suggest that you purchase a gripper handle. These come in various styles, all with the same function - to keep fingers away from the cutting blade, and to help apply pressure on the ruler.
