How can I cover uneven walls, other than with wallpaper?
The previous owners of my present home covered the walls in the hall with a plastic boarding / paneling. I hate it. The walls will be uneven when I remove this plastic. I do love plain painted walls. Plasterers are expensive but I cannot do it myself. Any ideas? Thanks

You could try beadboard https://www.hometalk.com/diy/decorate/walls/diy-beadboard-entryway-41259300

I have a new post coming on my blog because we just redid a room where the walls were awful from the previous owners love for Venetian plaster. We rented a drywall sander from ABC rental. Looks like a weed whacker with a disk on the end. There is a hose attachment for your shop Vaccuum. Dust will be bad so wear a mask. Anyway, this is an idea if you want to get smooth walls. Here is what it looks like:

It's my next post that I will be putting out in the next week or so..... so keep a look out for it. I will go into detail on how to make old walls look like new construction. My blog is https://karupp-did.net.
Just what I would like to do. Unfortunately I wouldn't be able to cope with the dust.
Thanks for your advice
Board and batten might work, then you can paint it either 2 tone or all the same color. Beadboard will disguise your cat's love for the walls.
Kathy: you could faux finish the wall -- to disguise the imperfection. Paint is the least expensive option.

Its really not hard to skim coat the walls with joint compound using a 12" drywall knife. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZIbAiXO3o4
You might have to remove it and then finish the walls with board and batten or shiplap or some other wood treatment to give it a nice finish.
You could use board and battan or bead board kits that you can get in Home Depot. I did a bathroom in Bead board and it looks great
