Hi Lee! When we did our hallway, we started at the bottom of the wall, using an old credit card as a spacer. We staggered the joints and covered the very top with molding since it's an old house and the walls aren't perfect. After sinking the nails, I filled them and then painted the wood. You could also stain them. If I had stained, I would have stained them first, before putting them up. I suggest doing the end cuts before putting them up, since it is less messy to stain them then.
