Just be careful if it has asbestos underneath it. If that is the case you shouldn't cut, sand or scrape. If it is actually linoleum and not vinyl the repair doesn't have to be the same. You can sand it and use the dust to repair it. That is what my dad used to do. http://www.doityourself.com/stry/how-to-remove-scratches-from-a-linoleum-floor#b http://homeguides.sfgate.com/repair-linoleum-floor-scratches-46568.html When I burned my brand new vinyl floor (20 years ago), with a hot from the oven cookie sheet, I sanded the spot lightly, and used a vinyl floor clear seam glue that I had bought from a hardware store. It lasted a very long time and barely showed (you had to know the damage was there). It came as a repair kit with a little tube of glue and a little stick (I think).

@Janet Pizaro No it is not ridiculous to ask since it is better to be safe than sorry. I'm no expert by any stretch, but have seen it a few times. I know that my old kitchen vinyl flooring had a type of fibrous underpad. When I took the cupboards out, the floor didn't go all the way to the wall. I very carefully lifted a corner of the vinyl and saw the ''pad" and just knew it was asbestos. I had an expert check it out, and was told I had 2 choices: pay for abatement or tape the edges and put flooring over top --no nail or screws. Sometimes it is in the glue or the actual tile too. @Z 's link is quite good. If the home is over 30 years old, suspect it and send a sample for testing. One of these days I will have to get some ceiling tile checked.

Seam kits should be available at a flooring store. Clean it, lightly sand only scratch edges, seal it.

Thanks for nice posting. It can definitely be repaired but don't do it yourself. Call the store where you bought it. They have a method that will render the place invisible. How you repair linoleum flooring depends on what kind you have and how it's damaged. The Vinyl or linoleum Floor Repair Kit allows you to repair those unsightly burns, cuts and gouges in your vinyl or linoleum flooring. It'll disguise imperfections up to the size of a quarter. I think you can get more innovative ideas for repairing linoleum floor if you consult certified professionals of flooring company.
