Can these wooden stairs be repaired?
Hello everyone,
I'd like to hear your views on this matter, please.
The stairs are incredibly squeaky and in bad conditions. There are gaps between risers and treads, and the wood is worn. 3 treads have horizontal cracks.
Is it possibile to repair this staircase? If so, how can it be fixed?
Thank you
Have a nice day

I'm sure they can be repaired, but I would consult a licensed carpenter to take a look at them, especially if the treads are cracked.
you could get free estiamtes from someone who does stair repairs to see what all is involved and the cost- otherwise it might be best to replace the them if they are cracked and squeaky here is info I found for you

Probably your best bet is to replace them, that way you'd have a uniform set of steps that are solid and no unexpected hazards.
It looks like someone tried to caulk the gaps between the risers and treads on some of them. Some stuff can be repaired and some may need to be replaced. Squeaks happen when the treads separate from the stringers and are loose. There are ways to fix squeaks. Cheryl A has provided a link for that. Videos:

If there is caulk between the risers and treads it would need to be removed to repair the squeaks. Once the squeaks are repaired the cracks can be filled with wood putty. Any damaged treads or risers would need to be replaced.
I would get a free estimate from a pro for this. How comfortable are you doing this type of work?
Thank you all for your ideas and suggestions. As most of you advised, I will get a free estimate from a professional.
Since you can access the under side of the stairs, you can add hurricane ties to help with the creaking. Definitely need to replace treads with cracks.
I personally think that this can still be repaired. However, it is best to consult a licensed carpenter to take a look at them, especially if the treads are cracked.
Parts of it could likely be repaired and there could be some replacement. Having a contractor come take a look will help you understand what can and can't be fixed.
