I have mine planted in the perennial bed on the north side of my house where they get almost no direct sun and it has thrived for the last 20 years. In Canada, especially on the prairies, I would only plant it in the ground, not in a raised box as the roots will freeze over the winter.

Here in zone 4, semi-arid conditions, it prefers a mostly shaded area and is absolutely gorgeous. Do put it in the soil if at all possible, where it won't totally dry out and it will stay green nearly all summer.

I'm in Idaho.  My bleeding heart is on the northeast corner. Only morning sun.  It gets HUGE every year!

Sometimes bleeding hearts go dormant in hot weather and disappear. Their  bloom time is limited so not sure they are a good choice for a window box.

I think it should be okay. I used to work in a historic house and bleeding hearts spread from the garden and grew happily in the roof gutters!
