I've never used it that way. I sprinkle it on the soil and work it in.

My grandma used to just spread it around the base of the plants that needed it, like bulb growing flowers such as daffodils, tulips, etc. She always had the nicest flowers in town, any town where she lived, no one had flowers like she had....
