It almost looks like a growth from a tree root. Even if the tree is not there the roots still keep going and spring up.

Appears to be a member of the Sophora family

I think the leaves look too big for Wild Indigo.

Sylvia, can you tell us how big the leaves are? Or another photo with a ruler or something for size reference would be helpful.

My phone camera has a way to search and identify plants and birds (I just recently discovered this feature) and suggests it may be a Sea Bean but also indicates several other options.

Sure!! It is a Wisteria bush........with the long grape figure of purple flowers.

You said it has purple berries. We live in NC and my grandma has an “American beautyberries shrub“ in her yard with leaves like that.

Or it could be poke weed. Similar leaves and purple flowers and known to grow in North Carolina and Virginia. We used to put them in our mud pies as kids

I have an app on my phone, to identify plants, called "Picture This." I love it! And, so far, it's been pretty accurate. I took a photo of your plant and the app revealed it's a Coralberry, a species of Symphoricarpos; also, known as Buckbush and Indian Currant.
